CLOJUG AUG 2014 - Java SE 8 - Java IoT - Adopt a JSR

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during August 2014.

This month we had an extra meeting with students at Universidad Javeriana where we talked about the new features of Java SE 8: Date and Time API, Lambda expressions and Streams API. Most of the students had zero or little experience with Java but they were really interested about these new features. The presentation about Java SE 8 can be downloaded from here (in spanish).

We run our regular meeting on 23-AUG-2014 at Universidad Icesi. This meeting was about Java and IoT. One of our members, +Sandro Hdo. Preciado Castro gave us a really great talk about this topic. We all enjoyed watching him with his electronic "toys" and learning from his experience with Java, Raspberry Pi and other devices.

We also talked about Adopt a JSR, we are about to enter the program and, as a start, we'd like to Adopt JSRs from Java SE 9 such as Money and Currency API (JSR 354) and Units of Measurement API (JSR 363). We'll let you know when we have entered the program and we've started to work on these two APIs.

CLOJUG - May 2014: Java 8 λs Hands-On-Lab

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during May 2014.

We run our regular meeting on 17-MAY-2014 at Universidad Javeriana, our new sponsor. We followed the JavaOne 2013 Hands on Lab about Lambda expressions in Java 8, but using the latest versions of Java SE 8 and Netbeans 8. Attendees were able to play with the new features by resolving some of the exercises, some of them really finished the HOL! Those who finished most of the exercises received either t-shirts or Pluralsight - Hardcore Dev and IT Training coupons.

CLOJUG - February 2014: Adopt a JSR + WildFly 8

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during February 2014.

We run our regular meeting on 15-FEB-2014 at Universidad del Valle. We had the opportunity to learn about the JCP, JSRs, the Adopt a JSR program, etc. Why they are important to Java developers and to the Java community. We also had the intervention of other JUG leaders from soujava (Brazil), GuadalajaraJUG (Mexico) and LJC (London) who shared with us their experiences with the program and gave us advice about how to start and keep moving Java forward. Special thanks to +Bruno Souza +Guillermo Munoz +Jim Gough
The hangout can be found at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/chti5e646pta0i3vaebmf5a6hd8

During the same meeting we celebrated our first birthday, ate cake and had fun sharing stories from the last year. Here are some pictures from the event:

We also had another meeting where +Arun Gupta introduced us to the new WildFly 8 which is Red Hat's Java EE 7 compliant open source application server. The main features are:

  • Lightweight : It starts in about 2 secs, light disk/memory footprint, loads containers on demand
  • Centralized Administration and Management: Starts in standalone or managed domain mode, provides multiple options to manage using CLI, REST, Admin Console, Ruby, PHP, Java, and others
  • Feature rich: Java EE 7 compliant, polyglot, role based access control, highly optimized new web server

As always, Arun's presentation was very informative and attendees were glad to have another JavaEE7 compliant application server and are eager to download and start playing/using WildFly 8. The event can be found at the following link, but it was not created as a "Hangout on Air" so there is no replay, only links to the slides: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c11afovo5qj0de1n1evis609gls

We run our regular JUG meeting on 23-NOV-2013 at a local pizzeria in Cali, Colombia. We decided to meet outside the classrooms in order to have a more easygoing and networking oriented meeting. It was a success, members of the CLOJUG started to talk each other about their roles, projects and, of course, Java. This was our last meeting in 2013, we hope to see you all again in JAN-2014.

Thanks to all our sponsors: Univalle, Unicesi, Oracle, PluralSight, Whizlabs, Codesa, O'reilly and Pack Publishing for their support during 2013.

We have new sponsors: Packt Publishing is now offering books discounts to our members and some free eBooks for our meetings. Codesa is now offering location and speakers for our meetings. Whizlabs is now offering discounts for their certification preparation solutions to our members. Thanks to our new sponsors!

We run our regular meeting on 26-OCT-2013 at Universidad del Valle. We had the opportunity to learn about JavaOne 2013 why it is important to Java developers and some tips that may help you in case you decide to attend. Members were interested about the conference and all the technical content that you can access. By the way, JavaOne 2013 content is available on demand now, you can watch for free: https://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/javaone_2013_sessions_online
As requested by our members, we did a certification panel where Java Certified members of CLOJUG talked about how they prepare for certification, how is the certification process, how much is it costs, whether it is relevant for your career, etc. It was a fun session, thanks to Isaias Lopez from Codesa, Java Certified Professional, for attending and sharing his experience with us.

We also run giveaways from our sponsors O'Reilly, Packt Publishing and Pluralsight - Hardcore Developer Training. They gave us books and free passes to access PluralSight's entire training library.

CLOJUG - July and August 2013: Java EE 7 Launch Event

    Hey all!

We (www.clojug.org) had our Java EE 7 launch event last week. It was great! Attendees did love the new features and were excited about implementing them in their new projects at work. We run the event at Universidad Icesi, great auditorium and computers room. We had a general session where the new features were introduced by the Cali JUG leaders (Guido, David and myself), then we had a nice refreshment sponsored by Oracle. After the break, we went to the Hands On Lab (HOL) where we followed Arun Gupta's HOL (find it here), which we translated into Spanish; we are making some changes to the translation and will make it available as soon as we finish. During the HOL we had some problems to run the sample application, but it was nice to see how the community worked together in order to solve the issues and we had a successful HOL.

We want to thank to all our sponsors, Universidad Icesi for such great locations and for streaming live the event. Oracle for the food and drinks and www.PluralSight.com for the free monthly passes to access their virtual courses for developers.

You can find more pictures of the event here:

And here you can download the presentation (in Spanish), works better with Google Chrome:

A replay (part of it...) of the general session may be found next (in Spanish):

OTN Tour LAD 2013 - Colombia

Hello all. This month, I had the opportunity to participate of the OTN Tour LAD 2013 in Colombia. This event organized by the local Oracle Users Group: ASUOC was held in Medellin on 12-JUL-2013 and there were great talks and hands on labs. I represented the Cali Java Users Group (CLOJUG) and talked about Java EE 7, the new features.

I liked the idea of the two communities (OUG and JUG) working together :-)

Following you can download the slides of the presentation, it was created using Impress.js which allows you to create HTML5 slides, really awesome! Just try to open it with chrome or any other HTML5 compliant browser:

    CLOJUG - June 2013

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during June 2013.

This month we had our regular meeting on June-22-2013 at Universidad del Valle. We had the opportunity to meet a code generator tool to develop JavaEE applications called Zathura - Code Generator for JavaEE. This tool was a nominee to the Duke's Choice Awards LAD 2013 in Brazil and has been cited in the Java Magazine earlier this year (p. 5). We were glad to have Diego Armando Gomez Mosquera, Project Owner of Zathura Project on Google Code who gave us a great talk!
Some of the main features of Zathura Code are:
    • It's a plugin for Eclipse IDE.
    • Open Source project in continuous development.
    • Generates JavaEE projects using different technologies including: Primefaces, Icefaces, Spring, etc.
    • Used by major local companies.
We also run a giveaway sponsored by Pluralsight - Hardcore Developer Training who is a leader in online training for developers. They gave us two free passes, valid for one month, to access to their entire training library.

    CLOJUG - May 2013

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during May 2013.

This month we had our regular meeting on May 25th 2013 at Icesi University. I presented the talk that I sent to JavaOne San Francisco 2013 (at the time of writing, notifications of accepted talks haven't been sent yet). The title of the presentation is: ADF Essentials + Glassfish Server = Enterprise Apps Free2Develop Free2Deploy. I wanted to show our jug members the way we can use ADF Essentials to develop modular, enterprise-like Web applications using this framework which, since September 2012, is free to develop using JDeveloper and free to deploy on Glassfish server.

We also run a giveaway sponsored by Packt Publishing where we gave the following recommended eBook to three lucky attendees:

Here are some pictures of this event:

The presentation went pretty well, the attendees liked what they saw, but we didn't have enough time to finish the demo. There are some things to improve and I'm glad I presented this at our local meeting before presenting at JavaOne SFO 2013 (fingers crossed).

    CLOJUG - April 2013

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during April 2013.

This month we had two meetings instead of one. The reason? Arun Gupta shared with us the new Java EE 7 libraries through a google+ hangout. We met on April 15th 2013 at one of our sponsor's facilities, Universidad Icesi, and hanged out with Arun. Questions were asked and had a great time with all the new APIs. Arun showed us some code and pointed out several ways to get involved. Here are some pictures of this event:

On our second meeting, April 27th 2013, at Universidad del Valle, we had Guido Granobles speaking about "Developing a High-Availability distributed system with Java EE 6 and JBoss AS 7". He showed us a step by step tutorial about how you can develop such systems. Really impressive! well done Guido!

Visit www.clojug.org for more information.

During this month (March 2013) we had our first meeting with new members, where we introduced them to the Java User Group's proposal and presented them three conferences: Java 6<7<8 by @aa_lopez, i18n in JSF 2 and Log4J2 by @daviaroc and Service distributed applications using JavaEE 6 and JBoss AS 7 by @guidogranobles

On the left you can see how the group looked like two months ago. On the right, you can see how it looks now :)

We even have a logo now! It is inspired by one of the iconic monument of our city called "statue of Sebastián de Belalcázar", founder of our city: Santiago de Cali (CLO).

What do you think about our logo? cool, right?

We are now preparing our meeting for the next month (April 2013), but before, we are going to have an extraordinary meeting where we''ll be hanging out with Arun Gupta about Java EE 7:
