Java One 2013 - Day 0 and Day 1

Hello everyone!!

It's been 3 days for me at JavaOne, first day is not an official day (Saturday), but was charged with a lot of networking, because that my friends, is the second most important reason to attend to this conference. So, lets see what I've been up to during these days:

Day 0 --> Saturday 21st 2013

This was the #GeekBikeRide day, we were supposed to leave at 11am, but the rain delayed everything, so we left at around 12m. It was quite scary at first, you know, the floor was wet, one person of the group even fell off and had to abandon...  

We went all the way to Sausalito crossing the Golden Gate bridge, really nice views, two difficult hills but a nice experience. It stopped raining once we reached the bridge. At Sausalito we had lunch and took the ferry back to San Francisco! Great view of Alcatraz, the bridge and the San Francisco city.

In the picture, among others, are +Kevin Nilson and +Van Riper from the Silicon Valley JUG, +Antonio Goncalves author of Beginning Java EE 7, +Badr ELHOUARI Morocco JUG leader and +Arun Gupta Java Evangelist and author of Java EE 7 Essentials.

At the end of the day Team Brazil and +Stephen Chin hosted a Brazilian BBQ... it was delicious, thank you  guys! Once again, tons of networking. I even met a Java Champion from Colombia Andres Almiray who is running an open source coding event during Java One called Codegarten. 

Day 1 --> Sunday 22nd 2013

This was the first Java One 2013 official day. This year Java One started before Open World so the keynote and user groups sessions were delivered at Moscone. 

The keynote was really interesting and it was full of surprises. First, Project Avatar was announced as open source!

Then, at the technical keynote, +Jasper Potts and other members of the Java team from Oracle showed a chess game built using Java EE 7, but the interesting part, is that the different clients for the Java EE 7 backend were: a HTML 5 application that runs on tablets, cellphones and PCs, a DukePad and a Robot (see the picture). Really awesome!

The rest of the day was packed with user groups sessions where I was able to interact with user groups leaders from around the world, sharing experiences and making connections. Special thanks to +Bruno Souza from Brazil, +Badr ELHOUARI from Morocco and Faiçal Boutaounte from JCertif for sharing their experiences and their valuable advices.

At night, we went to the Glassfish community party at the Thirsty Bear, once again, another opportunity for networking, free food and drinks yeii!! Had a great time with Team Brazil and met other Java One attendees. One special person I met that night was Robert Treacy, a legend, he has been at 16 JavaOne conferences, 16!!! and this is the 18th JavaOne, OMG, lots of stories and a great talk.


More days to come, several sessions to attend and more networking events.

CLOJUG - July and August 2013: Java EE 7 Launch Event

Hey all!

We (www.clojug.org) had our Java EE 7 launch event last week. It was great! Attendees did love the new features and were excited about implementing them in their new projects at work. We run the event at Universidad Icesi, great auditorium and computers room. We had a general session where the new features were introduced by the Cali JUG leaders (Guido, David and myself), then we had a nice refreshment sponsored by Oracle. After the break, we went to the Hands On Lab (HOL) where we followed Arun Gupta's HOL (find it here), which we translated into Spanish; we are making some changes to the translation and will make it available as soon as we finish. During the HOL we had some problems to run the sample application, but it was nice to see how the community worked together in order to solve the issues and we had a successful HOL.

OTN Tour LAD 2013 - Colombia

Hello all. This month, I had the opportunity to participate of the OTN Tour LAD 2013 in Colombia. This event organized by the local Oracle Users Group: ASUOC was held in Medellin on 12-JUL-2013 and there were great talks and hands on labs. I represented the Cali Java Users Group (CLOJUG) and talked about Java EE 7, the new features. 

I liked the idea of the two communities (OUG and JUG) working together :-)

JDeveloper 12c is not starting after successful installation

Hey All!

Last week, JDeveloper 12c was released and since I've been working with ADF during this year, I wanted to try it out right away. However, after successful installation, it didn't started... I work on Ubuntu 13.01 and have successfully installed JDeveloper 11gR1 and 11gR2 before and it was pretty smooth so I thought it would be the same with the new release.

Anyway, I started to check the error log and found that something was wrong with the "Open File Limit" property of my Ubuntu. The funny thing is that it is well documented on the Installation guide of JDeveloper 12c...

I made the suggested change (I had to reboot) and then, tried to run JDeveloper again, this time I got a different error message saying that it couldn't write core dumps or something... It also suggested me to execute this command before running JDeveloper again:

ulimit -c unlimited

And so I did, but no luck. When I tried to run JDeveloper again, I got this error:

plop! I had no idea what to do... However, as curious as I am, I tried to run JDeveloper using root user (you never know, right?). So I entered the following command on my console, inside the JDeveloper bin directory:

sudo ./jdev

The JDeveloper bin directory in my case is at:

/home/aalopez/development/Oracle/Middleware_12.1.2/Oracle_Home/jdeveloper/jdev/bin/

Once run with root user, JDeveloper started working!! yeii!! The only pitfall is that every new project/file that you create with JDeveloper, will be owned by root user...


What I like about this new release:

• Adoption of Java EE 6.
• Adoption of JDK 7.
• The new ADF Faces components.
• The new logo.
• New version of ADF Essentials.

I highly recommend you to try this new release.

CLOJUG - June 2013

Hello all! This is a small update about what we did at the Cali (CLO) Java User Group - CLOJUG during June 2013.

This month we had our regular meeting on June-22-2013 at Universidad del Valle. We had the opportunity to meet a code generator tool to develop JavaEE applications called Zathura - Code Generator for JavaEE. This tool was a nominee to the Duke's Choice Awards LAD 2013 in Brazil and has been cited in the Java Magazine earlier this year (p. 5). We were glad to have Diego Armando Gomez Mosquera, Project Owner of Zathura Project on Google Code who gave us a great talk!
Some of the main features of Zathura Code are:

• It's a plugin for Eclipse IDE.
• Open Source project in continuous development.
• Generates JavaEE projects using different technologies including: Primefaces, Icefaces, Spring, etc.
• Used by major local companies.

We also run a giveaway sponsored by Pluralsight - Hardcore Developer Training who is a leader in online training for developers. They gave us two free passes, valid for one month, to access to their entire training library.

Book Review: Oracle ADF 11gR2 Development Beginner's Guide

Oracle ADF is a framework for building Rich Web applications with Java which is built on top of Java EE. So if you have previous experience in building Web applications using JSF you are likely to start developing with Oracle ADF pretty fast. On the contrary, if you are just beginning with Web development, the visual and declarative development that this framework offers will let you build your applications in a fast pace.
The latest release of the framework (as of today) is 11gR2 (11.1.2.4.0) and you can develop using Oracle JDeveloper or Eclipse with the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse  (OEPE) plugin. Oracle ADF is not free, but there is a smaller version of the framework that is free to develop and free to deploy (even on production) and is called ADF Essentials.

In this post, I'll be reviewing the book "Oracle ADF 11gR2 Development Beginner's Guide" written by Vinod Krishnan and published by PACKT. Although this book covers the 11.1.2.3.0 version the concepts are the same as of the latest version (11.1.2.4.0 released on May 2013), it is a great book to get you started with Oracle ADF.
I enjoyed the way the chapters are written: first, they introduces you to the concepts that are going to be explained. Then, they have this "Time for Action" section, where you are asked to follow a set of steps in order to better understand a concept. There is another section called "What just Happened" where the author explains what you just did in the "Time for Action" section. At the end of each chapter, there are key questions regarding to the content of the chapter (answers are found at the end of the book). I think this is a good way for learning.

Following is described what you will find on each chapter:

Chapter 1, Installing and Configuring JDeveloper IDE, shows the steps you should follow in order to start working and get familiar with JDeveloper which is the official IDE for Oracle ADF applications.

Chapter 2, Getting Started with ADF, introduces you to the key concepts behind Oracle ADF applications development such as: MVC, Entity Objects, View Objects and Applications Modules. There's also a sample application which guides you to the steps needed in order to develop a simple application.

Chapter 3, Understanding the Model Layer, explains deeply what the model layer of an Oracle ADF application looks like and their relationships. It explains the meaning of every option for the Entity Objects and View Objects.

Chapter 4, Validating and Using the Model Data, shows the different validations that can be configured in the model layer. Explains the declarative validation mode and how to validate data using Groovy expressions.

Chapter 5, Binding the Data, this chapter explains how we can bind the model and view layers of an Oracle ADF application. Key concepts are Data controls and Page Definitions.

Chapter 6, Displaying the Data, talks about the development of the Web pages. It explains the concept of Page Template which is an important concept when developing Web applications with many Web pages. Then, you are presented with some of the most important ADF components for building your Web pages.

Chapter 7, Working with Navigation Flows, presents the concept of a Task flow and the different types of task flows that ADF offers. It also describes the different components that conform a task flow. An important chapter, since the ADF lifecycle is described here.

Chapter 8, Layout with Look and Feel, since Oracle ADF supports skinning, this chapter explains what skinning is, the concepts behind ADF Skinning and how you can create and deploy skins for your  application.

Chapter 9, Implementing Security, is about roles, permissions, and other security concepts related to Oracle ADF security. It also provides a step by step guide to configure and deploy security for your applications.

Chapter 10,  Deploying the ADF Application, presents the configurations needed in order to deploy your Oracle ADF application to an application server, which in this case is Weblogic Server. It also explains the structure of the deployment files and deployment descriptors. Shows the steps needed to deploy an Oracle ADF application to a standalone Weblogic server.

Chapter 11, Advanced Features of ADF,  this chapter is all about advance configurations including: tuning Entity Objects, tuning View Objects, debugging ADF applications, among others.
